Excel Navigation Tips – Highlighting Rows And Columns

A tip for getting around Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets Quickly

One of the things I have found in designing spreadsheet applications is that it saves many hours of time when you know how to use the keyboard shortcuts in order to navigate around the spreadsheet quickly and efficiently. I have learned many of these tricks by rushing on the keyboard and noticing that I did something, then re-tracing my steps in order to figure out what I did.

Here’s a tip on highlighting Rows and Columns:

  1. CTRL + Spacebar: Highlights the entire Column you are in. Fig 1-1
  2. Shift + Spacebar: Highlights the entire Row you are in. Fig 1-2
  3. If you have a range of cells across a row highlighted and then do Step 1 you will highlight all of those columns
  4. If you have a range of rows highlighted and do step 2, you will highlight all of those rows.
